Patty’s Big Box of Knitting Fails: Spinner’s Edition
For those of you that have taken classes with me, you know all about “Patty’s Big Box of Knitting Fails”. I seem to have an example of something tragic I’ve done in my knitting for nearly everything I’m teaching.
Since I figured why keep my humiliation limited to knitting.Today’s episode . . .
Bad Spinning or . . .
Look Ma, I made rope
When I first learned how to spin, I had such a hard time with drafting. That is the process of letting the fiber run through your hands, drawing out a section to add twist to. I pulled and pulled and the fiber wouldn’t move. I wrote about it here, 11 years ago!
The first sad chunky yarn I spun, I plied together into an even sadder bulky 2 ply yarn. My spinning pal took one look at it and said “you made rope!”, she saw my face fall a bit and she then added “it’s really nice rope.”

I knit it up into a hideous, unwearable hat . . . and I was so proud

My second spinning attempt got a bit less pathetic
and by my third time around, I was beginning to get the hang of it!
I still love my rope hat, and I like to keep it as a reminder of where my spinning began.
Do you have a tragic first project that you keep?
